Spragg's Free Range Production Process: Everything You Need to Know About Our Pigs

Spragg’s Meat Shop was born out of a dream to raise pigs. Greg Spragg had experience working on a commercial pig farm, but when it came to farming practices he had a different vision. Bonnie and Greg Spragg began raising their own pigs in 2002, after Bonnie gave Greg three piglets for his birthday. Over the years, their business grew, and they embraced the free range system for raising pigs. Today, customers can count on Spragg’s to use low-stress farming practices while providing the freshest free-range pork products in all of Alberta.

What does our production process involve?

Happy Pigs

Our pigs are raised outdoors and have free range through two five acre pastures. These pastures are the perfect place for pigs to live. They can happily graze all day long, as well as eating a mix of barley and fababeans from their feed bunks. They have access to water for drinking and mud to keep cool.

Healthy Pigs

Many commercial pigs are fed antibiotics to prevent disease. You won’t find the use of antibiotics on the Spragg’s farm. We work hard to ensure that our pigs live healthy lives in a healthy environment. We provide our pigs large, open spaces to enjoy throughout their lives. We also ensure that they get a plant based diet, free from any processed animal based protein meals. The plant based diet starts with all whole grains grown in Rosemary and the pasture grasses. Greg grinds the dry grain into a coarse flour to make it more digestible for the pigs. In the winter, the pigs also get straw and dried alfalfa along with their ground ration.

Our ethical production process means that you can feel good about the pork you’re purchasing! The pig that made your pork possible had a good life and has made a healthy meat product without excessive chemicals, animal byproducts and unnecessary medicines.
