From Farm to Table: The Journey of Spragg’s Meat Shop’s Pork

Today, there is a rising interest in how food is grown and raised. The farm to table movement has been a driving force in the resurfacing appreciation for local, traceable food. Life on the Farm

To keep up with the growing demand, each week, piglets are born and raised indoors at a local hog producer’s farm. Once they reach 50lbs, the pigs travel 100km to live a low stress life on our free-range pastures in Rosemary, Alberta. They enjoy a plant-based diet, half of which is grown on the Spragg family’s 200 acres of irrigated land and the other half is purchased from extended family and neighbors in the Rosemary area. The pastures are also seeded annually to increase the grazing time for the pigs.

During the colder months, straw and alfalfa hay not only keep the pigs warm but also keep the foraging component in their diets. Did we mention that our pigs are antibiotic free? By raising happy pigs in a healthy environment, we are able to create safe, great tasting pork products.

One Bad Day

We pride ourselves on providing our pigs the best quality of life possible during their time on the farm. However, every pig does have one bad day, as we like to call it. After four to five and a half months on the farm, once a pig reaches 240lbs, they will travel a short 24km to be slaughtered and provincially inspected.

At the Meat Shop

The main processing and retail outlet for our free-range, natural pork is in Rosemary Alberta. We prepare all of our free-range pork products for the farmers’ markets, retail locations and restaurant and wholesale customers at our Meat Shop. Within two days, the pork is delivered back to the Meat Shop and processing begins.

On Your Table

Finally, we travel 180km to deliver our pork products to a number of Calgary restaurants, stores and markets within two days of processing. Meaning you can have the freshest free-range pork available in Alberta on your table every week!
