We have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and we want to make it extra special! Instead of slaving away in the kitchen, preparing the fixings, and scheduling all of the dishes right so that the turkey can take priority in the oven, we are switching things up and pulling out our handy slow cooker.
For what you ask? We are all about serving up a juicy ham this Thanksgiving, and yes it can be done entirely in your slow cooker. It doesn’t clog up your oven, there is minimal prep, and the meat comes out moist and tender. You can simply set it and forget about it for five or six hours – plus it warrants lots of leftovers!
We recommend making a honey glaze to baste the ham with. Our favourite combination includes brown sugar, honey, mustard, and cloves. The meat will absorb the juices, making it extra tender and giving it a sweet and salty flavour that will also taste great as a sauce when you’re serving the ham.
For this recipe, we recommend picking up an 8-10 pound ham that you can get at one of our meat shops, of course!
Here is the recipe for our favourite Honey Glazed Ham that you can make in your slow cooker. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
½ cup Brown Sugar
½ cup Honey
1 tablespoon Mustard (Dijon or regular)
¼ cup Water
Place ham in the slow cooker
Combine the ingredients for the glaze in a saucepan and stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, creating a smooth and thick consistency (should only take 2-5 minutes). Add corn-starch if it doesn’t thicken quickly.
Pour the glaze over the ham in the slow cooker and repeat 3 or 4 times
Cook the ham for 5-6 hours and remove when the internal temperature is 145 degrees Fahrenheit
