Ask Your Butcher: Our Favourite Summertime Meals

It is finally summer and finally time for more dinners with your family (and friends at a safe distance) in the backyard! Summer means you need to pull out the barbecue, dust off your tongs and sharpen your skills because it’s officially grilling season!

We’ve asked your favourite butchers and farmers working behind the scenes at Spragg’s Meat Shop what our favourite summertime meals are, and this is what we had to say:

Bonnie Spragg

Bonnie, Spragg’s very own co-owner and Rosemary Meat Shop manager, says that kabobs are her favourite summertime meal. She loves kabobs because of their versatility and greatly enjoys experimenting with different marinades and different meat and vegetable combinations. No dinner is every boring in the Spragg’s household!

Ruth Spragg

Ruth, daughter of Bonnie and Greg and the person responsible for the beautiful lamb in Spragg’s Meat Shop, says the classic hamburger is her go-to summertime meal. What meal screams backyard cookout more than a hot juicy burger fresh off the grill?! Toss some fresh seasonal veggies beside them on the barbecue, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a summertime showstopper!

Calgary Meat Shop - Leanna

Leanna, our local butcher and Calgary Meat Shop manager, has two favourites in the summertime. Steak and salad are a staple in her household all summer because it requires no slaving over a hot oven. You can make the whole meal while hanging out on the patio, and it is a satiating but lighter option. Her second favourite meal is fajitas due to how versatile they are for proteins (you can use chicken, pork, beef, or fish), and how perfect they are for backyard gatherings as guests can build their own. Or, if you don’t have any guests, they are ideal for leftovers. Plus, both of these dishes include an abundance of seasonal vegetables, making it exceedingly easy to make alterations.
