The Spragg's Pork Journey from Farm to Table

Spragg’s Meat Shop is a family-owned and operated farm and business, located right here in Rosemary, Alberta. From farm to table, our focus is on quality and taste, and we believe that when you know your farmer, you know your food.

Sustainable, small scale farming practices form a key part of the vision of our local family farm. These practices help to protect the environment and our natural resources. We believe that staying small and selling only to a local consumer base provides a better balance for the ecosystem. As a local meat processor, Spragg's Meat Shop is building a sustainable, dependable local food production chain. Small scale food processing is equally as important to getting high-quality products to the consumer as the farmer is.

We wanted to take a moment to share with you a little bit more about how Spragg's pork makes it from our farm to your family’s table!

How it all began!

Spragg’s Meat Shop has grown and developed significantly since its beginning, but, like most successful business ventures, it all started with a wish almost two decades ago when Bonnie gifted Greg with three little pigs for his birthday. The first pigs of many.

Fast forward to today, our commitment to raising pigs outside on pasture, selling the pork direct to the consumer, and supporting our rural community as a whole has never changed. We are proud of the pigs that we raise, and we hope that Albertan families get as much enjoyment eating our pork as we do getting it to their tables.

Enter the Piglets!

Our piglets are born at a local hog producers farm and are raised indoors until they reach 50lbs. The pigs then travel to live a low-stress life on our free-range pastures in Rosemary, Alberta.

Happy Farm, Happy Pigs

We pride ourselves on providing our pigs with the best quality of life possible during their time on the farm. In the spring and summer months, our pigs wander in the pastures and enjoy a plant-based antibiotic-free diet. Free-range pigs have plenty of room to roam and explore – and they tend to develop their own unique personalities!

During the colder months, the pigs are in the same pastures but generally choose not to wander and graze to the same level. Straw and alfalfa hay keep the pigs warm and keep the foraging component in their diets. By raising happy pigs in a healthy environment, we can create safe, great-tasting pork products.

Fully Grown Pigs

Once our pigs have reached 240 lbs., they are loaded at the farm and transported for slaughter and provincial inspection. Once chilled, the pork is then transported back to Spragg’s Meat Shop in sides to be further processed.

Processing at Spragg's Meat Shop

We process all of our pork on-site at Spragg's Meat Shop. Processing begins within two days of slaughter, meaning our products are incredibly fresh.

Fresh Pork for Sale!

After processing, our products hit the shelves of our Rosemary and Calgary Meat Shop locations and make their way to the Calgary Farmers’ Market. All of our fresh pork cuts are cut and packaged weekly, and the whole process is timed to get the freshest pork products possible to you, the customer.

Why Should You Care About Ethical, Sustainable Farming?

When you purchase Spragg's pork products, you know you are feeding your family the highest quality, ethically raised, local meat. Some of the benefits for the animals, the environment and the community include;

  • Less stress on the animals – our pigs are raised outside and use their natural instincts to eat, drink, stay warm or cool, and socialize with the other pigs.

  • No stored manure – With a pasture-based farming system, no pig manure collects in enclosed spaces. We do not need a manure management system as the pigs do that all by themselves. This decreases our environmental impact.

  • Lower carbon footprint – because everything is produced locally, your food doesn't have to travel far, meaning that it has a much lower carbon footprint.

  • Supports the local economy – Because all of our vendors and suppliers are based right here in Alberta, you are helping to keep money in our local economy when you buy from local farmers. Staying local also means we can reduce costs, meaning you are getting considerable value by purchasing high-quality meats at a great price!

Spragg's Meat Shop has been honoured with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce award for Environmental Stewardship. We're committed to continuing to reduce our environmental impact and ensure we remain 100% local.
