What it Means to be "Your Farmer, Your Butcher, Your Meat Shop"

You may have seen our tag line on our new packaging, our website and our social media, but what does it really mean for Spragg’s to be “Your Farmer, Your Butcher, Your Meat Shop”?

In short, it means that our focus is our community, and we are here for you.

We are a small local family-owned and operated farm headquartered in Rosemary, Alberta, with stores in Rosemary and Calgary. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all in various ways, and we are feeling those effects in our operation as well. As more families are cooking at home and the demand on grocery has increased, we find ourselves busier than ever.

The safety and health of our staff and community is, and will always be our highest priority.

We are taking measures to increase our sanitation and adapt our sales methods to alleviate public concerns about crowded retail areas and provide options for our customers to shop safely. This includes the introduction of curb-side pick-up options for our customers. Like many small businesses, navigating these unprecedented times has come with countless challenges while trying to provide our clientele with essential services.

What we are seeing is that when the mainstream food production system becomes overwhelmed, there are major ripple effects. We all saw the results of panic buying on toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Right now, every local abattoir and meat processor is trying to keep up with demand and double their output. However, we are seeing a strain on the system’s capacity to do this. On a local level, there are plenty of animals and lots of demand, but only a set amount of slaughter and processing capacity. Unlike large chain grocery stores, we are the farmer, butcher and meat shop, meaning we are the entire supply chain. Because of this, we can respond to the demand and restock in a much shorter time frame than the large meat processors. Though, there is still a limit to what we can supply, whether it be pork, chicken or beef.

 We are doing our very best to get our products to our customers, though there are some weeks we may not have every product available. We have encountered some glitches on the production side, including a back-order or delay on some of our ingredients and supplies. We are taking it all in stride, and working with what we can in our new reality as different areas of our province deal with COVID-19 outbreaks. 

Knowing all of those details, we want you to know that Greg and I, along with our staff in Rosemary and Calgary, are committed to working every day to get our meat products to our customers. We love producing the finest quality cuts of local, ethically raised meats for our community.
